Create a custom tray and then just long press-->shortcut and choose the type of connection you want like a link to their contact page, direct dial or message them. Its a bit of a hassle but it works. I believe you can even make it text only so that it looks like a contacts list.

Thanks, but I was hoping for a list of favorite contacts just like when you add the Contact List, but only the ones you have starred.

That might be a feature that can be added in the future. For now, the dev is still working the bugs out of the public beta.
