Transparent icons?

Where can I get transparent icons to use for my themes? I copied and pasted one from another theme I DLed, but it felt like I was stealing from the person who created the theme in the first place.
I have several JPG and GIF files on my computer that I would like to use in my themese as icons to hide springboards.
