go to icon/label style then icon/label layout and choose icon graphic only

hmmmm there no editing mode in this forum? anyway...what you can do is make a new "picture" block, put the icon you want in block. drag the icon and overlap the springboard and make sure the springboard's layer is 1 less than the icon's layer. that way you see the icon on top instead of the springboard's text

What i have been doing is making the springboards text and background and such all transparent and placing them over the images.

You guys have it exactly.
