Theme Stealing!
Added by ChrisOliver almost 2 years ago
So it is a bit flatering when I notice my theme being reposted under the recent theme list as "version2" "updated" "improved" or for the super lazy developer, the same exact title and discription.
But its a bit more annoying than anything really. It would be nice to be able to put some sort of ID on our finished themes, or even some simple acredidation beneath the title?
I spent a bit of time building my theme from a completely blank screen, it would be nice if others respected that, rather than just editing someones springboard's font and uploading it as "version2"
My theme is simple_clear

Hey man. The dev 100% plans to implement this type of thing. At the moment being in beta it's more of a feeling out period, and often people upload their version of your theme because they have no idea what they're doing (and the upload/export defaults to Internet).
We should see naming lockdown, and options for theme ID lockdown (can edit but not reupload) and complete lock (cannot edit). All of this will be down the track of course. Until then, it's just something we have to deal with. The bonus is that the good theme makers will always get big numbers of downloads compared to these "versioners" :)

Its not something I'm worried about, more just wondering about how it might be fixed.
Thanks lemon!

Huh. If Simone has made the theme I made better. So be it. They probably fixed a. Issue I couldn't fix due to the fact im very new ar this and I haven't a clue as to what the he'll a psd a ui and the intents are for. So really ill applaud those who make my theme theirs. I simply gave a backbone for it and they added on and helped finish it. But when the lock down for themes has come to fruition. Ill definately allow others who see my themes andwant to share their take on mine to share their work on mine as well. I enjoy seeing what others have made of my theme and its fun.

Yeah I have the same feeling. Some people took my Borderline themes and added new colours, and I'm cool with that. I haven't seen many reinterpretations of my theme that come close to the level of polish (or usability) that I like, but I'm happy for people to pull it all to shit.
Eventually if I'm investing time and making my own graphics and art, and if there's an option to sell themes then I'll look into it, but till then it's no big thing. I'm just happy people like the stuff I make. :)

Wait... I just thought of something that maybe could be utilized full in the next update or whenever down the line. It can be utilized in the preferences as well or when your about to upload your theme to the rest of the world why not have an option of locking the theme. So that you can only edit small shortcuts and widget sizes but everything else you cannot access. This way the people who are theme stealing have to make their own or if you don't mind sharing your theme fully have it unlocked for the rest of the world.
Im not trying to start an argument. Im just trying to set some middle ground.

That sounds like a massive overhall of how the system works. Right now, it is just reading an xml file. So for something like that to work, it would have to change the way it works. Because you would still need the info from the XML file, but make it un-writeable except by a set user or with a password or something. So instead of a standard XML file, it would have to be encrypted, but in a way that SH could read it, but not anyone else.

Oh well. Then why not just have that feature for when just uploading it to sh or th sd I mean having the option to make it so you can't edit the theme is one way to prevent people from stealing it. But if its gonna be a huge hassel then nevermind. But there still has to be a way for people to have some kind of credit for putting their hard work into a theme. I mean maybe a founder thread I guess? Something in the forums that showcases themes made by users and then showing what people have added or done to it for all to see? I don't know I'm just throwing ideas out there to see if anything thing might work to help the users who want to somehow say this is my theme and I want to be credited for my hard work but if you want to change something go ahead but don't say its yourswhen its mine. . I don't know im rambling now. But if there is anyway to give credit where its due I think go for it if you want. And if you want to let people change it to fit them so be it.
Or what about having it so when you dl a theme it makes it so that you can run it and all that save it to your sd but can't upload it to the internet? Maybe that could be done?
Again just throwing ideas out there is all

Yeah all good thoughts man. The dev has plans for these types of functions but it's a lot to build. It'll get there eventually.

As someone who is new to this I am thinking about stealing just to save all the tweaks I've made on an otherwise good for theme.
